Painter Mark Rothko has just landed the biggest commission in the history of modern art: paint a series of abstract expressionist murals for New York’s soon-to-be-opened Four Seasons restaurant. For two years, Rothko works feverishly to complete the project, chasing inspiration, challenging public opinion and waxing philosophic on the state of modern art. But once his assistant, Ken, begins to brashly challenge Rothko’s theories and philosophies, Red becomes a masterpiece of artistic speculation: what does art mean? And what does it mean to be an artist? Winner of the 2010 Tony award for Best Play.
